Letter to rep in US Congress: reference existing laws, proposed bills **it is ideal to write to 1 of our Senators, or YOUR rep--check their committees!! Letter to person in federal agency (aka Bureaucracy): reference existing/proposed regulations/rules Letter to federal judge: reference existing or pending court decisions Letter to local policymaker: you have some flexibility here. I suggest looking at mandates! DUE MONDAY JUNE 5 |
HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR LETTER(s):
1st Paragraph: Introductions + purpose. Who are you? Why/how are you connected to this issue? Why are you writing the letter to THIS SPECIFIC PERSON? Can introduce the policies you'll be discussing. 2nd - 3rd Paragraph(s): The "meat" of your letter. Should convey deep knowledge of your issue, specific to the part of government that is receiving the letter. Should reference existing relevant policies--and your opinion about the impact of these policies. Use evidence to support your claims! You should express your concern--or give thanks--for any proposed policy. Again, use evidence to substantiate your claims! Last Paragraph Where do you see America heading with your issue? What are your hopes for the future? What suggestions or proposals do you have? Be sure to conclude the letter with thanks!

Please read THIS EDITORIAL......either print and annotate or jot down some notes to be prepared to discuss!
*Note: Since this was written, all numbers referenced have increased, EXCEPT for the interest rate on Stafford loans, which is now at 3.86%.
